Rock N Roll, Wings, And Falls
After heading out of Michigan we made our way to Ohio and to yet another Wal-Mart parking lot. They aren’t sexy but they serve the purpose of giving us a place to sleep and regroup. We picked a place in Ohio to check it off Luna’s map of the states and for the Old Man to realize that he really wanted to go to the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.
In fairness most of what his (and mine) reason for going was a Bowling for Soup song. It was a rainy gross day so walking around inside was just fine. The dogs were happy to nap in the van and the Old Man and I explored a bit. The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is pretty cool and while I am not sure I would go to Cleveland just to see it, it is totally worth the stop if you are already there. I enjoyed seeing all the memorabilia. I took a few pictures of The Boss for my Springsteen crazed friend. I did laugh at the Woodstock turns 50 exhibit as the description of what that movement was about made me think of how currently #vanlife is taking over the “younger” crowd.
I only managed an hour or so in the museum, but the Old Man who is a master of museums went much longer and stayed around to watch the movie they show that is like being at a live concert of the inductees.
Ready to hit the road we drove through rain and headed for our home for the evening. The next morning we worked where we slept and worked out how long it would take us to get to Buffalo and where we should sleep. We are adjusting back to being able to get from place to place in a few hours verses days when we were out west and in Alaska. The Old Man found out where the Buffalo Wing was “invented” and we set our sites on Buffalo.
Arriving in Buffalo at 5pm was nice and it was easy for us to find a parking spot for Luna while we headed into the Anchor Bar for some wings (the originals) and a few beers. Still raining we wrapped up dinner and headed to Niagara NY for some sleep.
Had a nice rainy chilly run in Niagara, welcome back to New England. The Old Man and I decided that since we were so near it only made sense to work half a day and then head over to Niagara Falls and Old Niagara Fort. Niagara Falls were never on our map and in reality I never even thought of it as a place to go. In my past life I would have had to fly or drive for hours to get there and it really didn’t seem worth the trouble. Hello van life you end up sleeping a few minutes away next thing you know you have tickets on Maid of the Mist and are checking out the falls.
The Falls were pretty cool, I was a bit disturbed that the bridge from NY to Canada is called the Rainbow Bridge and the Old Man and I kept looking around for Zoe. The Maid of the Mist is exactly what you would expect but that is what made it so amazing. We hit a good time so our boat was not even half full so we had a great view and the Falls themselves were just an amazing show of nature’s forces.
The Old Man and his love of forts which meant we had to stop at the Old Fort Niagara. The Fort didn’t see much action during its time but it is currently still an active Coast Guard base. The Old Man had a blast and was super excited to see the musket demonstration. I won’t lie, a fort is a fort, but it did have a great view and I waved at one of my Canadian co-workers from across the lake.
Forted out we finally made our way to our amazing campsite on Lake Ontario. We decided that since it had been awhile since my last shower and actual cooked food it would be nice to find a place where we could relax a little in somewhere that wasn’t a parking lot. We hit the jackpot!! Our campsite was right on the lake and the sunset was amazing. After tacos for dinner I finally got my shower and life was clean again. As the sunset and the darkness set in Simon was a bit sketched out by the wind and sound of waves, he decided that he preferred to stay inside the van than out with us next to the fire.
A rain storm seemed to be heading our way so we used that as an excuse to join Simon in the van and hit the hay a bit early. Today was a great reminder of why we are living in our van if even for a short time. Things that never crossed our mind to do we get to check off the great To Do list of life.
Next stop more of New York and the Old Man’s must do Saratoga Battlefield.
