Labor Day and Vineyard Runs
Sad to see family in our rear view mirror, but we must move on on our mission to get to Boston by the end of September. We headed to the Old Man’s friend’s house in Kalamazoo, MI where once again we were parking in his yard. The best part his yard has a vineyard (concord grapes for Welch's) and two miniature donkey’s not to mention so much room for the pups to run.
Running a bit early the Old Man and I stopped at the Indiana Dunes Park to walk the dogs a bit and look at some water. Lake Michigan may not be a gulf or ocean, but at least it is big enough to create waves on the beach and it was good to feel sand under my (cold) feet and hear the water. I being the mean one in the family made everyone climb up a dune called Devil’s Slide which was quite the feat but the view was worth it, and we really do need to start getting more exercise. Fun had, sand in our toes, and now running behind we booked it to Kalamazoo for our Labor Day BBQ.
After Google getting us lost we finally found our way to the house and to the good times. It was great to see the guys again and finally get to meet their better halves. We enjoyed some good beer, great food, and even better conversations. Did I mention the miniature donkeys? I am sure I did but I have to mention them again. Simon was not a fan of Sam and Frodo, but Simon is a bit of a wimp. Jayne loved them and really wanted to play with them, Sam and Frodo having a doggie fear (and rightfully so from past experience) were having none of it and made sure to stay away. Poor Jayne she finally wanted to play with someone and they didn’t want to have anything to do with her.
After dinner we watched as our host fed Sam and Frodo and then they walked us through their vineyards that have fallen in a bit of disrepair and the neighbor didn’t have enough labor to lease the vines. But with no fence we walked through the commercial vineyards yielding their fruits to Welch's grape juice. OOH and were those grapes yummy. The dogs had so much fun running through the acres of vineyards and of course getting muddy and gross.
A cigar and drinks by the fire allowed an amazing view of full blood red moon and a reminder why we are starting our southern descent. It is starting to get cool at these higher latitudes.
At the suggestion of my hostess I ran the vineyards. HOLY VINEYARD BATMAN. It was a rough two miles zigging and zagging between the vines. I got a good hill workout in, got some grape eating done, and of course took some amazing sunrise pictures over the vineyard. If you ever get a chance to run in a vineyard do it, it was amazing and did I mention the grapes?
Saying goodbye to Sam and Frodo who were happy to see us and our pups leave, but at least not without a little lick and some nibbles. We must head east and work our slow way to Boston. Next stop Cleveland and the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and then some Buffalo Wings.
