Hi.

We are Gypsies who like it Risky.

Nashville

Nashville

Nothing says family Thanksgiving like a few days in Nashville. For many of years my family has done what I like to call destination Thanksgiving. It was practical when I was young as my parents could take one day off work and get five days so we had a bit of time to travel. As I got older and moved away we used it as a chance to see each other and see fun places.

This Thanksgiving we decided on Nashville, it was easy for all of us to get too and it had been a few decades since mom had toured the city.  First on the list was getting the ‘rents some hot chicken. We headed over to Hattie B’s and after only a 20 minute wait (usually a good hour or so) and lucking out on a table we enjoyed our hot chicken. Oh man was it yummy!

The next day we decided the Hop On/Off bus was the way to scope out the city and get a feel for what we wanted to see in more detail. While riding around (staying warm inside the bus) we learned a lot of the cities history, stuff I never learned while living there. The Old Man I kept laughing that we never actually saw any of Nashville when we lived there. I guess we were too busy working and driving in traffic.

We hopped off at the Parthenon so the ‘Rents could compare it to the real one in Athens that they had already seen the month before. I will admit the Parthenon always impresses me, but I guess if you have seen the original it is just a cut rate imposter.  After our ride through Music Row, which was pretty cool to see, we headed to the Glutch to grab some food. Time to introduce the ‘rents to spiked milkshakes at Burger Republic.

We decided to hop back on the bus after lunch to visit Marathon Village & Antique Archaeology so we could do a bit a shopping and we could see what the American Pickers had found to sell. It was fun to walk around and see all the crazy stuff. The Old Man tried to take home an elephant, which is why some days I am glad we live in a van, nowhere to store a giant elephant.

For the big day aka Thanksgiving we watched the parade, ate sausage bread, drank champagne, and cooked up some chili till it was time to head over to Mere Bulles for our big Thanksgiving dinner, which for me was scallops. The Old Man was the only one who went traditional with turkey and dressing he is so boring. It was an early night with the sun going down early and nice filling meal in our bellies.

Avoiding Black Friday we decided to play tourist again. We had visions of eating at Loveless Cafe but a call to the restaurant told us we had an hour wait and we still had a half hour drive, we figured it was time for Plan B.  We ended up at The Cookery  it wasn’t exactly what we wanted but the biscuits were good and it gave us the warm fuzzies for their cause to help the homeless.

When in Rome.....

Our first real stop was Draper James to scope it out and see what they have. It was a neat store, but a bit out of my price range, plus nothing really went with Luna. After a bit of looky loo shopping we headed over to Tootsie Orchid Lounge for a few beers and some honky tonk music. I can now say I have drank where Johnny Cash and many others have drank. We walked over to Printer’s Alley which is much smaller than I remember, but was really the only thing touristy the Old Man and I did while living in Nashville.

The next day the 'Rents heading down to Atlanta and us staying one more night for dinner with old co-workers we headed over to Jack Daniels to do the distillery tour.  With each distillery tour I learn something new and Jack Daniels was no different. While I will admit I am not a huge JD fan it was cool to see how it is made, and taste a few of their single barrels. I know have a new appreciation for Jack Daniels. The Old Man in true Old Man fashion found a new whiskey he liked and bought while there.

It was weird to be back in Nashville, but I am glad we went back and did the tourist thing. We missed out on a lot when we lived there do to our circumstances and in fairness the short time we were there, but it is a great town and a fun place to visit.

Next stop Atlanta and then back to Florida so we can stay warm this winter.
